Hocus Pocus? Vonnegut, Detroit, Chinese Real Estate

Something very strange is happening to Detroit. Once upon a time, it was the center of American manufacturing and it had the highest per capita income in the United States. But now the city is dying and the Chinese are moving in to pick up the pieces. Lured by news stories that proclaim that you can buy homes in Detroit for as little as one dollar, Chinese investors are eagerly gobbling up properties. In some cases, this is happening dozens of properties at a time. Not only that, according to the New York Times “dozes of companies from China” are investing in businesses and establishing a presence in the Detroit area. If this continues, will Detroit eventually become a city that is heavily dominated by China?[…]

What a toehold up for grabs! What a bargain! What a way to extract some of their bills owed to them by our USA’s bogus dollar trade debt.

It’s called being foreclosed upon and the threat of debtor’s prison looming greatly.

  1. I’ve been curious about this too…right now I work in Detroit…look into the guy who is running for mayor, he was CEO of DMC (where I work) Michael Duggan, was write in candidate in primary, caused a controversy which gave him lots of free publicity, caused him to be a write-in and he used it to great advantage, will be on the primary ballot for mayor of Detroit. I don’t trust him, he is a politician in the worst sense of the word. I know it is still small potatoes, but seeing what he has done so far he gives me the creeps. Also, we are in so deep to China in our debts, I was thinking that perhaps there might be something going on behind the scenes in their manipulations to pay off some debts to China (?) by giving them such opportunities (?) I mean perhaps they were promised things when they bought our govt bonds.

    1. Sounds like it’s a real complicated situation, Susan, I am interested in this city because there is still a lot of value in Detroit. In my humble opinion a bankruptcy would be healing, but I know it has taken 40 years to get the city to this point and that it is a testing ground and model for entire industrial/city future of US.

Detroit has much beauty, rich historical valuable infrastructure and it is truly part of the heart of USA. I pray for all Detroit’s citizens to get the right helps and safety from the vultures.

I think the local level will be the determiner in Detroit’s situation and in all regions and cities, it will take individuals vs “the common good” to see where we go from here.

All the communitarians preach for”the common good” at the expense of the destroying the freedoms of the individual who would be the good neighbor who would be the true helper of the needy.

The writings of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn also really explain the evils of communism and socialism.
