Excerpt;……………….For the first time, scientists have found complex, multi-celled creatures living a mile and more below the planet’s surface, raising new possibilities about the spread of life on Earth and potential subsurface life on other planets and moons.

Nicknamed “worms from hell,” the nematodes, or roundworms, were found in several gold mines in South Africa, where researchers have also made breakthrough discoveries about deep subterranean single-cell life.

At least one of the bacteria species discovered earlier by Onstott and Lisa Pratt of Indiana University lives entirely disconnected from anything on the Earth’s surface or produced by photosynthesis. It uses the radioactive decay of nearby rocks as the energy source to break apart molecules that it then feeds on.

Borgonie speculates that the nematodes, which feed on bacteria, traveled through the cracks and crevices of rock in search of food. While they were determined to have lived deep underground for 3,000 to 10,000 years, the bacteria discovered by Onstott was found to have lived at its great depth between 3 million and 40 million years. A major difference between the two appears to be that while the nematodes adapted, the bacteria have evolved.

Complete worms, up to one-third of an inch in length, were found in two mines, and DNA of another was found in a third. They were found in water flowing from boreholes in the rock of the mines at depths from two-thirds of a mile……………………………………………………………………………………………………..
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
……………………………………………………………………………… Borgonie, working with a team from South Africa’s University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, descended into the deep mines about 25 times to collect samples. He said there is good reason to believe nematodes, and other multi-celled organisms, also live deep below the surface of many other parts of the world, and especially below ocean beds.

Research into the distribution of underground microbes in recent decades has led scientists to conclude that more than half of the biological mass on Earth is below the surface…….End Excerpt.

Below is another thought on these “new” discoveries, but first here is hope for radiation clean up for all the nuclear “crap” modern scientific knowledge has let loose upon the world since the start of the nuclear age.

Lifeforms Can Clean Up Radiation … Naturally

When BP spilled huge quantities of oil into the Gulf, the company and the government ignored natural ways to help clean up the mess, and instead dumped toxic dispersants into the Gulf which actually made things worse.

Likewise – believe it or not – there may be natural ways to help clean up radiation from Fukushima and elsewhere, and to reduce human and animal exposure to radioactive elements.

Scientific American points out:  http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=radiation-helps-fungi-grow

Like plants that grow toward the sun, dark fungi, blackened by the skin pigment melanin, gravitate toward radiation in contaminated soil. Scientists have observed the organisms—somewhere between plants and animals—blackening the land around the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine in the years since its 1986 meltdown. “Organisms that make melanin have a growth advantage in this soil,” says microbiologist Arturo Casadevall of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. “In many commercial nuclear reactors, the radioactive water becomes contaminated with melanotic organisms. Nobody really knows what the hell they are doing there.”

***”Melanin is very good at absorbing energy and then dissipating it as quickly as possible,” says Jennifer Riesz, a biophysicist at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. “It does this by very efficiently changing the energy into heat.”

But Casadevall and his colleague Ekaterina Dadachova, a nuclear chemist at Einstein, speculate that the melanin in this case acts like a step-down electric transformer, weakening the energy until it is useable by the fungi. “The energy becomes … low [at] a certain point where it can already be used by a fungus as chemical energy,” Dadachova argues. “Protection doesn’t play a role here. It is real energy conversion.”

Cosmos Magazine notes:

Sitting at the centre of the [Chernobyl] exclusion zone, the damaged reactor unit is encased in a steel and cement sarcophagus. It’s a deathly tomb that plays host to about 200 tonnes of melted radioactive fuel, and is swarming with radioactive dust.

***But it’s also the abode of some very hardy fungi which researchers believe aren’t just tolerating the severe radiation, but actually harnessing its energy to thrive.*****

The Washington Post notes:

At least one of the bacteria species discovered [miles underground] lives entirely disconnected from anything on the Earth’s surface or produced by photosynthesis. It uses the radioactive decay of nearby rocks as the energy source to break apart molecules that it then feeds on.

Mycologist Paul Stamets – writes:  http://coalitionforpositivechange.com/stamets-fallout-mycoremediation.pdf

Surprisingly, we learned from the Chernobyl disaster some species of melanin-producing fungi thrive, feeding on concrete, within the highly radioactive environment of the damaged containment vessel. At Chernobyl, some fungi’s growth was stimulated by severe radiation, even when exposed to >1,000,000 rads!

And now Materreads Commentary;

Scientists think their discovery of the worm organisims in the 1st article here, is an indicator that there may be life on other planets and moons.

OK, I’ll concede that,

BUT

there is another thought;

It may well be that instead of confirming that life is possible elsewhere than earth, it could be a confirmation of the Bible’s hell “where the worm drieth not up.”

Here is a link that leads to a study on the subject which is (WARNING!) very grim and serious; as I say in the explanation on the banner of this blog that I read and record many things here for my own future reference, so please don’t follow me into something you aren’t interested in already!

Here’s the link;

http://www.av1611.org/hell.html

Excerpt;

In Mark 9:46, Jesus Christ says about hell: “Where THEIR WORM dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.”

Jesus said explicitly — THEIR worm — not a worm, or the worm — but THEIR worm. The Bible teaches that Christians will one day have a body like the Lord Jesus Christ. Could it be, as some Bible students teach — that men and women in hell take on the form of their father, Satan (John 8:44)? In Revelation 12:3, Satan is described as a red dragon. Could Jesus Christ be referring to the body lost men and women will have for eternity?

The earth’s crust on land is normally 50 miles thick. You’d have to go down 50 miles before the edge of the fire. But in parts of the ocean floor, the earth’s crust is less than a mile thick.

Scientists recently discovered cracks on the ocean floor where fire was leaking out. Do you know what they found around these fire-breathing vents in the crust? Eight-foot long worms, found no other place in the world! The book, The Deep Sea, by Joseph Wallace (p.39), reads, “Perhaps the strangest of ocean creatures recently discovered are Riftia, the giant tube WORMS. Measuring up to 8 feet in length, the worms are ONLY FOUND NEAR DEEP SEA VENTS.”

And Jesus Christ said, “Where THEIR WORM dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.”

Have you read Isaiah 66 where the Lord Jesus Christ is quoting Mark 9:46?

Look at the context and time period of Isaiah 66:22-24:

Isaiah 66:22-24:

22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.

23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

The “new heavens and new earth” of Isaiah 66:22 matches Revelation 21:1. This occurs AFTER the Great White Throne Judgement of Revelation 20:10-15! The references to “carcases”; “their worm”; “their fire” (vs 24) — is AFTER the Great White Throne Judgement of the LOST people! The reference to “. . the men that have transgressed. . .” are the LOST people AFTER the Great White Throne Judgement.

And at this point — they have received their NEW BODY! Notice what Isaiah says, the saved people shall “LOOK upon the CARCASES of the men that have transgressed. . .” It’s worth mentioning that a “carcase” is not always a “DEAD body”. For instance, two times the Bible specifically uses the term “dead carcase” (Deut. 14:8 and Ezek 6:5). If a carcase is ALWAYS a “dead” body, then why say “dead” carcase? And there’s NOTHING in the context of Isaiah to imply these “men that transgressed” are “dead”.

In fact, Isaiah clearly says, “their worm shall NOT DIE”. Even in our language, we refer to a living body as a “carcase”. For example, “Get your carcase [body] in here”. Why is that important? Because when the saved people in Isaiah 66:24 are “looking upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed” — And do you know what they are SEEING? “Their worm”! The “carcase” they are seeing is “their WORM that shall not die”. The end of Isaiah 66:24 is a frightening endorsement of this interpretation. What the saved people are viewing Isaiah says is , “. . . an abhorring unto all flesh”. End Excerpt.

OK! More Bible study needed.

Here are National Geographic articles of interest which show that much has been researched on these forms of life.

Along the Galápagos Rift, off the storied Galápagos Islands, is a hotbed of volcanoes and hydrothermal vents that spew boiling soups of metals, salts, and poisonous gas. These seemingly inhospitable vents are home to some of the toughest, most exotic life on Earth, including clams and mussels as big as dinner plates and bright-white tubeworms six feet long.

The giant tubeworms, discovered during a pathbreaking exploration of the rift in 1977, forced a rethinking of life on the ocean floor. The rift lies 300 miles (500 kilometers) north of the Galápagos Islands, and the seafloor extends 8,000 feet (2,500 meters) below the waves. “The rule of thumb was that only small organisms could occupy the deep sea,” says Tim Shank, a biologist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts and co-director of a recent expedition to the Galápagos Rift organized to mark the 25th anniversary of the hydrothermal vent discovery.

These worms live in pitch-black ocean depths in water laced with acid and toxic gas—harsh conditions that may resemble those in which life first evolved. Scientists want to decode the tubeworms’ survival skills.

The pilot in the submersible maneuvered Alvin’s robotic arm to slide the probe into a worm, inch by inch. Every four seconds the probe measured the temperature, acidity, and concentration of two gases (hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide), all of which are critical to the survival of the tubeworms…………….
 …………..

“Actually, the tubeworm has no stomach, no gut, no eyes. It is basically a bag of bacteria with an aorta and gonads,” Shank says.

Scientists say the water temperature at the base of the tubes is 176 degrees Fahrenheit (80 degrees Celsius). Only single-celled bacteria are known to survive hotter temperatures……………………………………….

A team of French scientists first discovered the Pompeii worm at hydrothermal vents in the Galapagos Islands in the early 1980s.

Since then, scientists have labored to understand how the four-inch-long (ten-centimeter-long) worms thrive in their extreme environment.

Not only do they survive the scalding temperatures and toxic chemicals spewed by hydrothermal vents, but the worms also live in total darkness and under the crushing pressure of the deep ocean……………………………

The worms are covered in a hairy, gray fleece composed of bacteria. The bacteria feed on mucus secreted by glands on the worms’ backs…………………………………………………………………………………………………..

………………………………………..The bacteria have long been the main interest of Cary and his research colleagues. The scientists believe the organisms may harbor enzymes useful for cleaning up oil wells, processing new drugs, and speeding up chemical reactions used in industry.

“Metagenomic” Survey

“Basically, we decided that rather than try to look at each member of the community individually, we would look at all of them at once using the same genomic tools used to look at the human genome,” Cary said.

The Human Genome Project was an international research effort completed in 2003 to map and sequence all the human genes.

The scientists hope to then construct an array of these genes and test them at the hydrothermal vent environment.

New varieties of the Lumbricus rubellus earthworm can eat hazardous waste, researchers reported in September 2008.

Above, the “reference” earthworms are normal, whereas the “stream” and “cottage” earthworms have evolved to survive in soils contaminated with high amounts of lead and zinc.

Newly evolved “superworms” that feast on toxic waste could help cleanse polluted industrial land, a new study says.

These hardcore heavy metal fans, unearthed at disused mining sites in England and Wales, devour lead, zinc, arsenic, and copper. The earthworms excrete a slightly different version of the metals, making them easier for plants to suck up. Harvesting the plants would leave cleaner soil behind.

“These worms seem to be able to tolerate incredibly high concentrations of heavy metals, and the metals seem to be driving their evolution,” said lead researcher Mark Hodson of the University of Reading in England…………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Hodson’s team’s investigation used x-rays to zap worms with intense light, allowing them to track metal particles a thousand times smaller than a grain of salt.

The findings suggest the arsenic-tolerant population produces a special protein that “wraps up the metal and keeps it inert and safe so it doesn’t interact with the earthworms,” Hodson said……………..
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
The lead-eating Welsh worms likewise use a protein to render the metal harmless inside their bodies, he added.

PHOTO IN THE NEWS: “Medusa” Worms Found in Mud Volcano

December 9, 2008—These new, undersea worms don’t have eyes to turn you into stone.

But their resemblance to snake-haired Medusa (above) wasn’t lost on discoverer Ana Hilário, who plans to name at least one after the mythological Greek monster.

Hilário, of Portugal’s University of Aveiro, and colleagues recently found 20 species of the tiny worms, called frenulates, in mud volcanoes in the Gulf of Cádiz, an arm of the Atlantic Ocean southwest of Spain.

Mud volcanoes are places where methane-filled fluids seep from the seafloor, providing energy for “exceptionally rich ecosystems,” Hilário said in an email.

(Related: “Giant Deep-Sea Volcano With ‘Moat of Death’ Found” [April 14, 2006].)  http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/04/0414_060414_volcano.html
But scientists know little about the elusive frenulates, tube-dwelling worms that survive thanks to bacteria that live inside a special organ in their bodies.

The worms absorb chemicals such as methane from sediment and deliver the substances, via their blood, to the bacteria, which in turn produce organic carbon. The carbon nourishes both creatures.

Hilario has already named another genus from the expedition Bobmarleya—the worm’s “dreadlocked” appearance reminded her of the Jamaican singer, she said.

WORM Research. Fascinating!  Too broad a subject, could go on and on and on!
Radiation mitigation?
Toxic waste disposal?
Methane disposal?
Alternative energy?
Medical applications?
Frankenstein results by intention or accident?

So much ties together in ways too complex to contain in this single blog entry. It makes the head spin!  The science always bears out the Bible, we just don’t always know how, maybe never this side of heaven. I think it is being revealed bit by bit, maybe soon?

  1. Isaiah 66:24 “their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched…”

I've thought on this also… it reminds me of the transformation of a butterfly 😉 from a caterpillar… and that “we must be born again” which involves a change that requires God transforming us in the inner man in which we put to death our flesh with Jesus on the cross. When a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, the caterpillar dies, it is a transformation that God performs and is a miracle of nature. In the unregenerate there is no transformation, their worm never gets changed and that worm never dies. What a scary thought…

  2. Hi Susan, I like thinking of the butterfly from a caterpillar, thank you for reminding me of the good that comes from believing in Jesus Christ our Lord.

I've been thinking of these things with a heavy heart since I found out about the death of a person I know who just could not believe. So sad thinking of how she refused to let God be her salvation.:( I don't know for sure but I think she killed herself in an attempt to join her deceased husband and daughter. It is such insanity when someone believes that lie! But how broken the mind becomes when after every chance to come to God they just won't!

Only God knows what she did in the last moments of her life, but I shudder to think.:( It is a warning to all that there is as she used to put it about something she knew was a very bad thing she did, “payback” or judgment. Reward for believers, but such a transformation into a damned creature probably never enters the minds of the rejectors of Jesus Christ because they embrace the lie of their father Satan. That is sobering information I wish preachers would tell their flock & take seriously.

  3. I really hate worms, disgusting creatures, yuk! But there's a reason for everything, I guess, I wonder if there will be a need for worms in the “hereafter”? There won't be any decay anymore…I think?
